Making of the Poster

For the first time I will just say I was disappointed with myself as I felt that I could have done a better job. But none the less i did it to best of my ability and i am happy with the outcome ,well let me get to the steps but before i get to that i will show you a picture that inspired my idea...

This picture gave me the idea of comparing the world from two different times now and the future; I felt this would be a good idea that’s why I ran with it.

The Steps

Firstly I started by creating the background by using the pen tool and then I picked a lively colour (green) which I feel represents the earth a peacefulness. After that I created the outline of the earth all in different layers so that I don’t have any unnecessary complications, after the outline I divided it into two parts so that I could better differentiate the times.

After making the outline I drew in the continents and then coloured them in with the appropriate colour. The words that I fitted in(reduce c02 before it reduces us) simply mean that carbon dioxide will make the ice melt and thus the ice will cover most of the earth and reduce us if not killing us all this.

My ideas

These ideas were aimed at making people aware of what we are doing to our planet that is why I used the globe on all of them so as to get the message straight and forward. It was hard creating them because you never know if it has already been used so I was afraid of copying someone else’s idea but still I think I did something original.

The first one of the earth with a gas mask shows that we are killing it and that’s why it needs the oxygen tank because we pump too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The second one shows the earth melting because it is just too hot for it.

Just like the words say our future is draining away, this is what is happening because as the earth dies so do we.

The third shows a before and after image of the earth. It is before the ice in the arctic melts and after it has melted that is why one side has more land than the other and one side has more water.

MY POSTER

My aim was to create something that was simple but yet straight to the point,i feel that i have done exactly that with the poster i have made.

My poster shows how the earth looks like now and how it will look in the near future if the ice in the arctic melts and believe me it will not be a pretty site.Making th poster i felt the need to get straight to the point and not beat about the bush so that people will exactly know whatit is about at first glance and not have thier own interpretations of it as some might go completely off and even convience others that what they say is indeed what the poster represents.

I felt that this was a good assingment as it focused on an issue that is truly terrorising the world and bring turmoil mostly because of the incidents which are occuring,i think we should take hint to this as this are signs that the worst of the worst shall come if we continue to kill our planet.

Global warming

This is a very serious issue which is currently turning the world upside down. Global warming is causing a lot of things to happen like the ice in Antarctica melting because of the increase heat in the planet which is a result of the greenhouse effect.

Global warming is not only causing ice to melt, it has also resulted in temperature variations places which were normally warm I either too cold or too hot like Africa. And storms which were never known in those areas are now occurring. But since someone is making a lot of money off all this it will be a long time before companies which pump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in great amounts are shut down. "In March we patrolled the area and everything was normal. We went again in May and to our surprise we found the lake had completely disappeared," Juan José Romero, regional director of Chile's National Forestry Corporation, said this week. "The only things left were chunks of ice on the dry lake-bed and an enormous fissure. We are not talking about a small lake, it's quite big. No one knows what happened."

A 40-meter wide river that flowed from the lake to the Pacific Ocean five miles away has been reduced to a trickle and can now be walked over.

For once, however, the prime suspect is not global warming or any other form of climate change. A team of geologists and other scientists due to fly to the site over the next few days has speculated that an earthquake cracked the earth beneath the lake and drained the water, as if a plug had been pulled.

Ricardo Jana, a researcher with the Chilean Antarctic Institute, told the newspaper El Mercurio that if a tremor caused the collapse then the scientists should be able to pinpoint how it happened.

Southern Chile has recorded thousands of minor tremors this year. A relatively big one in April is suspected of pulling the plug on the lake, but the scientists stressed that was conjecture.

The lake, which had been fed mostly by water from melting glaciers, was so remote it had not been named and had been omitted from some maps. The park rangers who noticed its disappearance did so by chance. They had been on a patrol to monitor huemules, a type of deer.

Magallanes province is often referred to as the end of the world since it is one of the most southernmost points inhabited by humans.

Despite the Magallanes mystery, climate change is more of a threat to South America's glacier lakes. Higher temperatures have forced the retreat, and in some cases disappearance, of lakes in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru.

My Poster

My aim is to create a poster which will show people the harmful effects of Global warming and also show them what will happen to us if we don’t take steps to battle this global disaster in the making. I want to show people how we are being exploited by the rich and powerful people who are killing our world.

If whole lakes can disappear in just a period of three months how long will it be before we do? It might seem farfetched but it could soon be reality if we just standby and help kill our own planet by not taking any action.

I aim to make a poster that can hopefully have an impact on people so that tragedies like the one above will never happen again.

My calender
The flag of course its the national flag of my country and the pot is a traditional pot which is used for holding/keeping water.

I believe the pot has a symbolical meaning in the way i used because i believe that just like Sir Seretse Khama it holds the well being of people which he did back when he was in power.

Making the calendar

First I uploaded a sketch of a design I made and after that I used the pen tool to trace it out. I then used the elipse tool to make the mouth of the pot.

I used the rectangular grid tool to make the grid for the calendar; I used the gradient to fill in the background of the grid. I also coloured the numbers and days differently so that I could set apart Sunday from the rest of the other days of the week. For the day I focused on I used a different colour (which was blue in this case) to differentiate it from the other days, I also wrote it in italics.

I added the fireworks to set the celebration mood to it, the writing in italics of the words also proved to make it a little bit more interesting to look at.

The calendar was great because it showed a day that celebrates the lives of a man whom I believe played a very important role in the history of Botswana.

Second design.

First design of my calender .This design is simply but yet straight to the point.

Well having given you a brief description about the holiday i'm focusing on which is by the way (Sir Seretse Khama Day,on the 1st of July),i will now tell you why i chose this particular holiday and month.

Firstly i chose the holiday because it celebrates the life of a man whom i believe has made a big contribution in the growth and political status of my country(for which i am more than thankful).I also believe he showed people that you can achieve anything you want to particularly his marriage to Ruth which had to have been a bold and courages move taking into consideration how the world was racist.

As for the month i chose it because firstly and obviously it has the holiday on which i have based my focus, secondly its because that President's day is also celebrated on this particular month and thus i felt the need to concentrate on this month.Thank you.

I am basing my calender on Sir Seretse khama day.
A day which upon we celebrate the legacy of our first president Sir Seretse Khama.

Sir Seretse Khama was born in 1921,he was a son to Sekgoma Khama the 3rd.His name "Seretse" means the clay that binds together.

He was a really educated man, who went through a lot of trials and tribulations but in the end he manage to get through them all.One that is mostly known is his marriage to Ruth Williams a young lady who he had met while studying in London and whom he had married after a year of courtship, this interracial marriage faced a lot of opposition especially the apartheid government of neighboring South Africa and also from the elders of his tribe.


Eventually they all had no choice but to accept the union.Seretse later established the BDP, a political party with which he ran for office in the 1965 election and won thus he was declared the prime minister of Bechunaland(now known as Botswana), and in 1966 Botswana gained its indipendence from british rule and he was elected as its acting president and at this time the country was among some of the world's poorest nations and this is what Seretse set out to change and he achieved this with the discovery of Diamonds in Orapa.Using the diamonds and other resources like beef and copper he help built an economy strongly based on the export of this commodities.

And thanks to him from the year 1966 to 1980 Botswana had the world's fastest growing economy,he was president until his death in 1980 from pancreatic cancer.He is said to be the founding father of democracy in Botswana.

CREATING THE SYMBOL

Well for starters are used the ellipse tool to create the shape of the earth,and then i used the wrinkle tool to create the crater on its surface.

For the drawing of the continents are use the pencil tool which proved difficult but yet effectively created the desired lines. The pen tool was used for the structuring of the diamond and it was also used to create the crack on the earth surface.

I also divided the creation in to layers which really helped me create with ease and lesson the complications of the creation.

I would like to say creating this symbol was a challenging but very fun experience,hope to do the same in my following assignments. Thank you.

MY SYMBOL

This symbol portrays a diamond colliding with the earth and shattering it into two halves, the diamond is shown larger than most diamonds which suggests greatness and shattering the earth suggest strength.

It symbolizes strength, greatness, potential wealth and happiness. The diamond also symbolizes me.

It symbolizes life, and it also symbolizes greatness, its colours symbolize happiness and calmness.

General meaning of the symbol

Well the symbol shows that I dream big and that I am reaching for greatness, it also shows that to some extent I am an angry person as we can see from the earth being shattered by the diamond that is destruction and in this case anger. But at the same time the earth colours also show that I have some calmness and happiness even with the existing anger imprisoned within me.

This sketch shows a diamond which has hit the earth hard cracking it in half.

Shows strength,i would also say potential and it shows big dreams as we know how expensive it is.


Colors
The colors used on the earth are green,brown and blue which are the earth's natural colors.I feel that they symbolize calmness and happiness,the diamond has a shiny and realy bright color which i feel symbolizes wealth and also happiness.

General representation
This symbol symbolizes that i am a happy and calm person and reaching for greatness,but it also shows that i am an angry person as we can see from the earth shattering representation.

FIRST SKETCH/IDEA

Well this sketch simply shows the earth in the palm of my hand and being slightly crushed as you can see from the small disfigurement.So what it portrays is that i have the world in my hand and i can do as i please with it,now let me elaborate on it further by dissecting it.

WHAT THIS SKETCH SYMBOLIZES
The sketch symbolizes that i can do great things with my life if i work hard at it,it also symbolizes that nothing is out of reach and that anything is possible even the impossible.

My personal symbol
This is a very interesting assignment as it requires one to try to fully define themselves in one simple symbol.It might seem simple but finding and creating that one symbol can be quite frustrating if you are out to find the perfect one.

Firstly i would like to start by a common frase which i believe helped me a lot in the production of my symbol, this phrase is one which says "the sky is the limit",i believe that I'm reaching for the sky but i don't believe the sky is the limit i believe that i have the world in my hands and it is mine to do as i please with and thus i believe that i can do and become anything i want if i work hard for it.

Well the above paragraph simply shows that i am a dreamer and that when i dream i dream really big,So my aim was to find a way i can express this in the form of a symbol.
